Antique Syrian / Damascene Inlaid Octagonal Side Table – Bone & Mother of Pearl
Description
A beautiful and highly decorative antique Syrian/Damascene octagonal occasional side table, believed to date from around the turn of the 20th century, circa 1900, possibly late 19th/early 20th century.
The table features exceptionally intricate traditional Middle Eastern decoration, with extensive bone and mother-of-pearl style inlay set into dark timber.
The octagonal/faceted top has a particularly elaborate geometric design incorporating contrasting geometric, floral and foliate motifs. The sides and pedestal are equally decorative, featuring intricate pierced/lattice sections and repeated Moorish/Arabesque arch designs.
This is a very striking example of the highly decorative furniture traditionally associated with Damascus, Syria, and would make an unusual collector’s piece or decorative occasional table.

The pale inlay appears to be bone and the iridescent elements appear to be mother-of-pearl. The materials have not been scientifically tested, so this is offered as an informed visual description rather than a formal material authentication.
Provenance
The table has been in the same family for over 40 years and was inherited from a  family meme era grandfather approximately four decades ago.
Unfortunately, there is no original receipt, documentation or maker’s mark accompanying the table.
Condition
The table is in original antique condition and displays signs of age and use consistent with its age.
There is some natural separation between the original wooden boards forming the tabletop. This appears to be age-related movement/shrinkage of the timber rather than a break or impact crack (see photos).
There are also a few areas where individual pieces of the inlay are missing, together with general age-related wear, rubbing and patination.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
The table remains standing and usable, although given its age and the natural movement of the timber, I would recommend treating it as an antique/decorative piece rather than subjecting it to heavy everyday use.
No attempt has been made to fill, glue or restore the areas of timber separation or replace the missing inlay.
