This cabinet came to the workshop a few weeks ago, with no makers label visible on the surfaces.

However, I took the doors off and the fixings, and removed the drawer for cleaning, and I found the gold lettered name 'Selecta' on the back of the drawer.

I have left this intact, as a reminder of the cabinet's past.

As I set about cleaning and making it ready for a colour change, I could see that the cabinet was an 'old upcycle'... the doors and drawer were clearly made from original parts, and the purpose had been changed to fit more contemporary use. The back of the cabinet also gave away that it had been an old lift up lid gramophone cabinet.

Selecta had been making these cabinets to store a gramophone and a set of records, but whoever adapted this had sealed down what would have been the housing for the player itself, and they had cleverly made a drawer out of the wood they took away, hence the Selecta original gold lettering that I found on the back of the drawer.

Processes.

It needed some filler, as the old wind up mechanism which had been on the side was removed, leaving some holes, so I filled all gaps and visible scars and sanded the surfaces before treating all the interior and drawer interior to several coats of ReColour recycled chalk paint in Teal.

I then used the same colour for the exterior casing, before applying gold leaf to the top of the cabinet and down the sides and front in a cascading effect.

I used Annie Sloan clear wax to protect enhance and seal in all the gold leaf and paint.

For the interior shelf, I noticed that it was made in two removable parts so I used metallic gold paint for one side and Teal chalk paint for the other, as they can be changed to suit your preference.

This is the second time we've bought off Upcite and will always return. This time around, we bought a Victorian Mahogany Chest Of Drawers (£429 including P&P) from Timeless Furniture LTD UK. We contacted Timeless Furniture (Wrexham) through the messages section and they (Dave) were super helpful in confirming P&P will be covered their end but also went out of their way to coat the chest of drawers with another round of woodworm treatment, which was much appreciated. The drawers had been treated before but Dave offered to do it again to allay our concerns. So, once they confirmed this we punched it. Nest of tables

The nest of tables are very tastefully done, they are the final piece of furniture in our living room and we're very happy with them. Comms with J&M were great and the tables were packaged very well so arrived in perfect condition. We will definitely buy from UpCite and J&M again when we next need a beautiful piece of furniture. An absolutely stunning, one-of-a-kind vintage cabinet, lovingly restored by Julie and Mark, whose craftsmanship and attention to detail really shine through. The delivery process, unfortunately, didn’t go to plan, with damage caused by the courier, but both Cole at Upcite and Julie and Mark were incredibly supportive throughout. They pushed to have the piece properly repaired and kept me updated the whole way. Thanks to their persistence and care, the cabinet looks just as gorgeous in my home as I’d hoped.
