Original Oil on Canvas Sea of Morpheus - ‘Roy Freeman’

A wonderfully unusual and imaginative original oil painting by Shropshire artist Roy Freeman, entitled “Sea of Morpheus.”

Signed Roy Freeman to the lower right and titled to the lower left, this is a striking surrealist composition filled with intriguing imagery and symbolism.

The painting centres around a dreamlike seascape, with a glowing sunset reflected across the water. Emerging above is a partial view of the Mona Lisa, while the right-hand side brings together an eclectic collection of objects including two roses in a brightly decorated vase, a crystal glass, an owl, a cat and a porcelain-style figurine.

The title “Sea of Morpheus” adds perfectly to the dreamlike nature of the composition. Morpheus is associated with dreams in Greek mythology, and the unusual juxtaposition of recognisable objects gives the painting an almost dream-state quality — familiar things brought together in an unexpected and slightly mysterious way.

The colours remain bright, rich and wonderfully atmospheric, particularly the deep blues of the background and the vivid reds and oranges of the sunset and flowers.

Presented in a substantial gilt-effect frame, which complements the painting particularly well.

Roy Freeman was a Shropshire-based artist whose work appears to have had very limited commercial circulation during his lifetime; another original Freeman painting has previously been marketed with the same provenance that his paintings only became available to the public after his death.

A genuinely unusual and conversation-starting original artwork, with plenty to discover within the composition.
