More than a century ago, this elegant oak bureau was created during a period when Queen Anne style was enjoying a major revival in British and North American interiors. Graceful proportions, sweeping cabriole legs and an emphasis on understated craftsmanship made the style instantly recognisable, and more than 100 years later, those same qualities are precisely what give this piece its enduring appeal.

Dating from the 1920s, this antique bureau has survived long beyond its original purpose. Rather than allowing that story to end, we have carefully restored and reimagined it as a beautiful traditional bathroom vanity, preserving the details of its past whilst giving it a completely new reason to be enjoyed.

Its distinctive silhouette is perhaps its greatest charm. The cabinet sits proudly upon four beautifully curved cabriole legs, finished with characteristic pad feet, creating a sense of elegance and lightness beneath the substantial oak body. Across the front, two generously proportioned drawers retain the simplicity of the original design, complemented by the bureau's original brass swan-neck handles. Each handle has been individually cleaned, polished and restored, allowing more than a century of character to remain part of the finished piece.

The restoration began by carefully stripping the bureau back to its original timber, revealing the natural grain and movement hidden beneath years of previous finishes. The oak was then enriched with a Dark Oak stain, bringing warmth and depth back into the timber whilst accentuating its beautiful grain.

To prepare the piece for its new life within the bathroom, the exterior has been professionally spray-finished with a clear satin lacquer. This provides a durable protective barrier against moisture, water vapour and the everyday demands of a bathroom environment, without masking the texture and character that make antique oak so desirable.

Above the restored cabinet sits an elegant Amber stone worktop. Predominantly white, the stone is interrupted by delicate trails of warm golden veining, bringing subtle movement to the surface and beautifully complementing the antique brass and rich oak beneath. A Half Bullnose edging profile softens the perimeter of the stone, introducing a gently rounded finish sympathetic to the curves found throughout the original furniture.

Taking centre stage is a traditional oval countertop basin. Its sculptural shape echoes the graceful lines of the cabriole legs below, creating a vanity that feels considered from top to bottom rather than simply converted. A tall traditional mixer tap in antique brass, finished with a contrasting white accent, completes the arrangement and brings warmth against the pale stone and ceramic.

Behind the original drawer fronts, our in-house carpentry team has carefully re-engineered the internals to accommodate modern plumbing whilst retaining as much usable storage as possible. What appears from the outside to be an untouched antique therefore conceals the practical considerations required of a modern bathroom vanity.

That balance is what makes this piece special.

It does not attempt to imitate the past. It carries the past with it. The century-old oak, restored brass handles and unmistakable Queen Anne Revival silhouette remain at the heart of the design, joined by carefully selected modern materials that allow the piece to serve another generation.
