The Gramophone Vanity
Originally crafted circa. 1920–1930's, this remarkable antique oak gramophone has been rescued from history and thoughtfully transformed into a distinctive countertop vanity. Once designed to fill homes with music, it now brings timeless craftsmanship and character to an entirely new setting, while proudly retaining the details that reveal its remarkable past.
Influenced by the Jacobean Revival movement, the cabinet reflects an era when traditional British craftsmanship was celebrated once again. Strong panelled doors, clean architectural lines and beautifully figured oak combine to create a piece that feels both elegant and enduring. More than ninety years later, its purpose may have changed, but its presence remains every bit as captivating.
One detail, however, has deliberately been left untouched. The original winding handle remains in place on the side of the cabinet, a quiet reminder of the gramophone's former life. It is these authentic touches that transform an antique into a conversation piece, preserving a tangible connection to its history.
Every stage of the restoration has been carried out with the utmost respect for the original craftsmanship. The oak has been completely stripped back to reveal its natural beauty before being carefully refinished and protected with a clear satin lacquer. This durable finish safeguards the timber against the everyday conditions of a bathroom environment, including moisture, steam and water vapour, whilst allowing the warmth, texture and character of the oak to remain beautifully visible.
Resting above the cabinet is a Misterio quartz worktop, chosen for its crisp white appearance and delicate veining that gently softens the surface without overpowering it. Finished with a refined chamfered edge profile and complemented by a matching stone upstand, it introduces a clean, elegant contrast to the warmth of the antique oak beneath.
At its centre sits a beautifully proportioned round countertop basin, its smooth sculptural form creating an elegant focal point. Rising behind it is a tall traditional mixer tap in antique brass, bringing warmth and period styling that sits perfectly alongside the cabinet's heritage character.
The original drawer fronts have been carefully preserved to maintain the gramophone's authentic appearance. The upper doors have been discreetly adapted as fixed fronts, allowing space for the concealed plumbing and waste system, while the spacious cupboard below, once home to the gramophone's internal mechanism, now provides generous storage for towels, toiletries and everyday bathroom essentials. The original handles have been lovingly cleaned and polished, ensuring every visible detail continues to honour the cabinet's heritage.
This is not simply an antique given a new purpose.
It is a piece of craftsmanship with a remarkable story, one that has journeyed from filling rooms with music to becoming the centrepiece of a beautifully designed bathroom. Created for homes that value originality, authenticity and furniture that cannot simply be bought off the shelf.
A piece with a remarkable past.
Ready to become part of your future.

"I don’t like to match furniture and love mish mash, quirky and odd looking things lol. I absolutely love them. My house is 203 years old and is grade II listed. I think it makes an old cottage come alive and puts a modern twist on it. I love furniture that tells a story or gets people talking at a house party".
