Tradtional Oak Bathroom Vanity Unit

Originally crafted as a substantial oak cabinet during the mid to late 20th century, this characterful piece draws its inspiration from the Tudor and Jacobean Revival traditions that became popular in British interiors. Designed to echo the robust, architectural furniture associated with English country houses of the 16th and 17th centuries, it has now been completely restored and reimagined as a singular undermounted bathroom vanity.

There is a distinctly English country character to the original cabinet. Rather than relying on excessive ornamentation, its appeal comes from its solid proportions, visible oak grain and traditional construction. The pair of substantial cupboard doors feature framed and panelled detailing, while the decorative metal hinges remain prominently displayed rather than concealed, a deliberate feature of Tudor and Jacobean-inspired furniture that adds to its period character. A gently shaped plinth at the base gives the cabinet a grounded, architectural stance.

Above the cupboard sits a wide original drawer and it is here that one of the more unusual details of the piece can be found. The drawer front incorporates a decorative pierced motif reminiscent of Gothic tracery, introducing a subtle architectural detail that reinforces the historic influences behind the furniture. The original turned wooden drawer handles have also been retained, keeping the front of the cabinet reassuringly simple and authentic.

We began the restoration by stripping the entire piece back by hand to its natural timber, removing its previous finish while being careful not to erase the character it had developed during its life.

Natural variations in the oak, areas of figuring and the subtle marks associated with age remain part of the finished piece. It was then stained in Light Oak, bringing warmth and definition back into the timber before being spray-finished with a clear satin lacquer. This final protective coating helps guard the wood against the moisture, steam, vapour and everyday water exposure associated with a bathroom, while allowing the grain of the oak to remain a prominent feature.

Converting a piece of furniture such as this into a vanity is as much about what happens inside as what can be seen from the outside. Our in-house carpenters have carefully re-engineered the upper drawer around the basin and plumbing, creating separate usable storage sections rather than simply sacrificing the drawer altogether. The original drawer front, wooden handles and decorative detailing remain completely intact, so there is little externally to reveal the work that has taken place behind it.

Beneath, the two original panelled doors open to reveal an impressively generous central storage cupboard with internal shelving. This gives the vanity substantial practical storage for towels, toiletries and everyday bathroom essentials and makes particularly good use of the cabinet's depth and proportions. The original locking mechanism has also been retained and unusually, the original key remains with the piece, another small part of its history that we felt was important to preserve.

The cabinet is crowned with a custom-cut, drilled and polished Amber stone worktop with a half bullnose edging profile, predominantly crisp white with delicate warm gold veining travelling naturally across its surface. The photographs show particularly well how the veining appears only intermittently rather than dominating the stone, giving the top an understated character and allowing it to sit comfortably against the warmth and movement of the oak. A matching Amber stone upstand runs along the rear, giving the installation a considered, fully finished appearance while also providing practical protection to the wall behind.
 

Set beneath the stone is a spacious oval undermounted ceramic basin, creating a clean, uninterrupted worktop and keeping the focus on the stone itself. The basin sits generously within the cabinet's proportions, with useful surface space remaining around it for everyday bathroom essentials.

Completing the vanity is a premium Bristan traditional three-hole tap set in polished chrome. The crosshead hot and cold controls, white ceramic indices and classically shaped central spout provide a crisp contrast against both the warm oak and subtle gold veining of the Amber stone. A coordinating chrome pop-up waste completes the basin installation.

What makes this vanity particularly successful is that the conversion has not attempted to make the original furniture something it was never intended to be. Its panelled doors, decorative hinges, pierced drawer detailing, original wooden handles, locking cupboard and even its original key remain part of the piece. The stone, basin and brassware introduce everything required of a modern bathroom vanity, while the craftsmanship of the original cabinet continues to define its character.

It is precisely this combination that makes restored furniture so different from a newly manufactured vanity made to imitate an older style. The variations within the oak, the original joinery and hardware, and the individuality acquired through years of use cannot simply be reproduced. Instead of recreating the appearance of traditional furniture, this piece allows the real thing to begin an entirely new chapter.
