W1408mm Vintage Double Bathroom Vanity Unit - Elizabeth II - Available

Ercol Colonial Vanity

A wonderful example of British furniture craftsmanship, this distinctive double bathroom vanity began life as an Ercol Old Colonial sideboard, manufactured during the 1970s. Beautifully constructed from solid elm, it represents an era when furniture was made with longevity in mind, combining traditional country-house styling with the quality and practicality for which Ercol became renowned.

The Old Colonial collection takes inspiration from traditional English country furniture, with its beautifully fielded panel doors, distinctive turned wooden knobs and understated decorative mouldings. The symmetrical design features a central bank of four usable drawers, flanked by two generously proportioned cupboards with internal shelving. Subtle scalloped detailing along the lower edge adds a softer finish, while the natural character of the elm brings warmth and individuality to every surface.

One of the most appealing features of this piece is its remarkable timber. Originally finished in the darker tones associated with Ercol's Old Colonial range, the entire sideboard has been carefully stripped back to reveal the lighter, natural beauty of the solid elm beneath. Its flowing grain, contrasting tones and distinctive figuring are now beautifully exposed, giving the furniture a fresher, more contemporary appearance without sacrificing its traditional identity.

Following restoration, the timber has been professionally spray-finished with a clear satin lacquer, enhancing the natural grain while providing protection against moisture, steam and everyday bathroom use. The original wooden knobs have been retained, maintaining the authentic character of this much-loved British furniture design.

The transformation is completed with a custom-cut, drilled and polished Amber stone worktop, predominantly white with delicate warm golden veining that complements the natural elm beautifully. Both the worktop and its matching traditional shaped upstand feature an elegant Ogee Bullnose edging profile, introducing a decorative, classical finish that sits comfortably alongside the sideboard's original detailing.

Two generous oval countertop basins create an attractive double-wash arrangement, each paired with a tall traditional antique brass mixer tap featuring a delicate white handle accent. Matching antique brass pop-up wastes complete the look, bringing together the warmth of the timber, the subtle veining of the stone and the rich tones of the brass fittings.

With four central drawers and two spacious shelved cupboards, this vanity offers excellent storage for everyday bathroom essentials, making it particularly well suited to a family bathroom or a generously proportioned en-suite.

What makes this piece especially appealing is the way its transformation brings together two different design eras. The craftsmanship and character of 1970s British furniture remain at its heart, while the lighter natural elm, elegant stonework and traditional brass fittings give it a renewed sense of purpose. A beautifully made piece of furniture, thoughtfully adapted for modern living and ready to be enjoyed for many years to come.
