A beautifully characterful vintage desk, hand-painted in a rich deep green and given a considered decorative update while retaining the traditional details that make the original piece so appealing.
With its elegant turned legs, two drawers and ornate original brass handles, this piece already had plenty of charm. I added WoodUbend moulding beneath the top, following the lines of the furniture to give it more presence and a more elaborate, traditional feel.
The result is a versatile piece that could work beautifully in several rooms and for several purposes.
A versatile piece of furniture
At 91.5 cm wide x 47 cm deep x 78 cm high, it makes a particularly useful compact writing desk or home office desk, with two drawers for keeping stationery and everyday essentials close at hand.
It could equally be used as:
a dressing table in a bedroom, paired with a beautiful mirror
a console table in a hallway, living room or entrance
a writing desk or compact home office workspace
The 47 cm depth gives it a little more substance than a typical narrow console, while still keeping its footprint relatively compact.
The details
The deep green finish allows the original shape and craftsmanship of the furniture to remain the focus. The turned legs and decorative detailing give the piece a lovely traditional character, while the aged brass handles provide a warm contrast against the green.
The added WoodUbend trim is one of the defining features of this makeover. Rather than covering the furniture in additional decoration, I used the moulding selectively to enhance the existing lines of the desk and give the piece a more substantial, elevated appearance.
