I used some hand cut wallpaper circles for the surface design, layered over each other quite thickly, to completely cover the original surface. After they dried thoroughly I lacquered the finish before repainting the black trim around the edge of the table top, and then using water based silver metallic paint on the leg tips.
Its turned out to be a really attractive piece which will fit with a neutral scheme, contemporary or retro styling, and it takes up very little space and is lightweight and easy to transport, as the legs unscrew easily.
