Wooden Carved Vintage Vanity Unit

Originally crafted as an oak bureau during the early 20th century, this beautiful piece dates to approximately 1900–1930 and has now been carefully restored and reimagined as a traditional bathroom vanity.

The design is strongly influenced by the Stuart Revival, sometimes referred to as 17th-century Revival, a style which looked back to the furniture and architectural details associated with the Charles II and James II periods. This influence can be seen particularly clearly across the front of the piece, where geometric raised mouldings and distinctive central diamond motifs give the cupboard doors their wonderfully architectural appearance.

There is a real solidity to this piece. The substantial oak construction, broad proportions and strong geometric detailing give it the presence of traditional English furniture, while the warmth and natural variation of the antique timber ensure that it still feels full of character.

As part of the restoration, the bureau was completely stripped back to its original timber, allowing us to carefully prepare and refinish the oak while preserving the characteristics it has developed over its lifetime. A rich Dark Oak stain was then applied, bringing depth and warmth back into the timber and highlighting the beautiful natural grain and patina.

Once restored, the entire piece was spray-finished in a clear satin lacquer, providing a durable protective coating against the demands of a bathroom environment, including moisture, water dwell, steam and vapour, while retaining the natural appearance and texture of the antique oak.

We have also retained the original cast brass drop handles, carefully cleaning, polishing and restoring them rather than replacing them. Their aged finish works beautifully against the Dark Oak and helps preserve an important part of the furniture's original identity.

The transformation from bureau to bathroom vanity has been carried out by our in-house carpentry team with particular attention paid to retaining as much usable storage as possible. The original full-width top drawer has been carefully re-engineered internally to accommodate the basin, waste and plumbing whilst remaining functional. Beneath, the pair of beautifully detailed panelled doors open to reveal a large storage cupboard with an internal shelf, providing plenty of room for towels, toiletries and everyday bathroom essentials.

Sitting above the antique oak is a bespoke Amber stone worktop, predominantly white with delicate gold veining running naturally through the surface. The understated warmth of the veining complements the Dark Oak beautifully without taking attention away from the furniture itself. The stone has been finished with a Half Bullnose edging profile, introducing a softer, more traditional detail around the perimeter of the worktop.

A spacious rectangular undermounted basin has been set neatly into the stone, maintaining a clean and uninterrupted surface whilst giving the vanity generous proportions for everyday use.

Completing the design is a set of Hudson Reed traditional three-hole crosshead taps in polished chrome, bringing a brighter contrast to the warm oak and subtle gold tones of the stone.

What makes this vanity particularly special is that its transformation hasn't erased its past. The original proportions, oak grain, restored hardware, geometric detailing and generous storage all remain very much part of the piece. We've simply given a beautiful piece of antique furniture a new purpose and the opportunity to continue its story for another generation.
