Wooden Single Vintage Bathroom Vanity With Sink

Originally built as an oak bureau, this characterful piece has been carefully restored and reimagined as a traditional countertop bathroom vanity, giving a piece of classic English furniture an entirely new purpose while retaining the details that made it distinctive in the first place.

The piece dates to approximately the 1970s–1980s and was designed in the Tudor or Jacobean Revival style, drawing its inspiration from English furniture and architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its strong proportions, panelled construction and low bracket feet all reference the substantial, grounded appearance associated with period English case furniture.

Perhaps its most distinctive feature is the carved Tudor rose medallion positioned centrally on the upper drawer. The Tudor rose has been used in English decorative arts for centuries, originating as an emblem associated with the union of the Houses of Lancaster and York. Here, it gives an otherwise understated oak piece a wonderful focal point and an unmistakably traditional English character.

During restoration, the timber was completely stripped back to its natural raw state, allowing us to remove decades of previous finish and rediscover the grain and character of the oak beneath. The piece was then refinished in a medium oak stain, chosen to bring warmth and definition back into the timber without disguising its natural figuring. Finally, the entire cabinet was spray-finished in a clear satin lacquer, providing a durable protective surface against the moisture, water dwell and vapour associated with everyday bathroom use, whilst retaining the natural appearance and tactile quality of the oak.

The original handles were unfortunately beyond restoration, so these have been replaced with a set of antique brass ring-style knob handles. Their restrained traditional design sits naturally against the warm oak and complements the antique brass bathroom fittings without trying to make the piece appear older than it is.

One of the great advantages of converting a bureau of this size is the amount of practical storage it provides. The original arrangement gives the vanity four generous drawer levels, including the two smaller upper drawers, and our in-house carpentry team has carefully re-engineered the internal drawer construction around the basin and plumbing. This allows us to retain as much usable storage as possible rather than sacrificing the functionality of the original furniture during its transformation.

Above the restored oak sits our Amber stone worktop, a predominantly white surface characterised by delicate warm gold veining. The subtle movement within the stone works particularly well alongside the medium oak and antique brass, bringing a lighter, more contemporary element to the piece without losing its traditional character. The front edge has been finished with a half bullnose profile, softening the lines of the stone and giving the worktop a more refined, furniture-like finish.

At its centre sits a generously proportioned round countertop basin with a traditional moulded profile. Its clean white ceramic creates a striking contrast against the oak below, while its shape gives the vanity a softer silhouette. Alongside it sits a tall traditional mixer tap in antique brass, complete with a white lever accent and matching antique brass pop-up waste. The combination of warm brass, white ceramic and natural oak helps tie the old and new elements together, allowing the modern bathroom fittings to feel entirely at home on a piece inspired by centuries-old English design.

What makes this vanity particularly interesting is the way its different periods work together. The furniture itself was produced in the latter part of the 20th century, yet its design looks much further back to Tudor and Jacobean England. We have taken that same principle of reinterpretation one step further, preserving its recognisable furniture form and decorative character while adapting it for an entirely new life in the bathroom.

The result isn't intended to look like a modern vanity made to resemble old furniture. It remains, first and foremost, a genuine piece of oak furniture, restored rather than replaced, its original character celebrated rather than disguised and now ready to begin a completely new chapter.
