Opening the doors of this stunning Art Deco gentleman’s wardrobe was like opening the doors to a time capsule, harking back to the days when dressing was something of an artform.
Originally created by I. Griew & Co, this piece is one of my favourite transformations, and now proudly stands as a true testament to the timeless elegance and craftsmanship of its creator.
Isaac Griew, an immigrant from Vilna, Lithuania, established I. Griew & Co. in Hoxton Square, London. Reknowned for their high-quality bedroom and dining room suites, Griew's firm thrived throughout the early 1900s, producing meticulously crafted furniture pieces that became cherished family heirlooms, embodying a rich history, unparalleled quality, and a unique graceful style that makes these pieces so sought after well over a century later.
The refinishing process of this wardrobe involved stripping away layers of varnish, which literally felt like stripping away years of history, to reveal the stunning walnut veneer underneath.
The door frames are now finished with gold metallic edging and a complementary black pinstripe border, enhancing its sophisticated look.
The door fronts are intricately decorated with a design inspired by a wildflower meadow, featuring trailing stems of luxurious gold buds and petals; this floral motif is mirrored on opposite corners of the wardrobe, showcasing the gorgeous wood grain.
This beautiful wardrobe still retains many of its original charms, like vintage signs for ties, sundries, socks, underwear, and pyjamas, and if that’s not enough, the left-hand door opens to reveal a tie rail, while the original pull-out trouser rail remains intact and functional, displaying a vintage patina that adds character to this wonderful piece.
Painted in Fusion Mineral Paint Coal Black with vintage metallic gold accents, and finished with Osmo Polyx Hard Wax Oil in Satin, this wardrobe perfectly blends historical masculine elegance with a softer, almost feminine update, making it ideal for anyone’s bed or dressing room.
It’s history and beauty make this wardrobe more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a little piece of history and is now ready to be cherished once again.
Delivery is via a trusted and fully insured two man crew to ground floor only.
Dimensions: 63 inches in height, 33 inches in width and 19 inches deep.
Each of my pieces are reloved in a caring manner - cleaned, sanded and fully prepped but they all come to me with a past life and as such can sometimes show signs of these lives, please bare this in mind when purchasing.

"I was looking for a piece to stand next to a small ornate fireplace in our 1920’s build home and kept coming back to this lovely makeover, named ‘Grace’. I’m so delighted to have bought it. Mandy took time and care in delivering it and although she emphasised the fact it was an old piece I can only re-emphasise that that is exactly what I was looking for. It is testament to her skills that she has given ‘Grace’ a wonderful new lease of life. The stencilling on the drawers is top notch; the piece is painted beautifully - including the bits you wouldn’t normally see, which I prefer. The beautifully highlighted claw feet on the bottom of the piece are a real treat to look at, and my beady-eyed art tutor/’general expert on painted stuff’ agreed Mandys’ work is superb – sympathetic to the piece and to a high standard. I know I shall enjoy having Grace grace our home for many years".

"I don’t like to match furniture and love mish mash, quirky and odd looking things lol. I absolutely love them. My house is 203 years old and is grade II listed. I think it makes an old cottage come alive and puts a modern twist on it. I love furniture that tells a story or gets people talking at a house party".
