George III Oak & Mahogany Crossbanded Chest

An elegant George III oak chest, crossbanded with mahogany, featuring two short drawers above three graduated long drawers, all fitted with simple yet decorative oval brass handles.

Solid and sturdy without being overly heavy, this chest has the grace and proportion typical of the late 18th century. A rich patina, enhanced by gentle fading and age-related marks, tells the story of over two centuries of use. The top shows some light staining, and a small square of veneer is missing at the back edge. Each flank has an age-related split, stable and unmoving – entirely consistent with chests of this period.

There is evidence of historic woodworm to the back panel, long since treated and inactive, as well as a historic repair to the underside of one drawer, neither affecting functionality or integrity.

Considering it is over two centuries old, this piece is in remarkable condition and will continue to serve and be admired for generations to come.
