Introducing the ’Beesley68’

This little rustic coffee table was hand crafted in 1968 by a man named Tom Beesley and in 2021 it was donated to paint kitchen workshop by Tom’s son and daughter-in-law.

The 'Beesley68' was originally a wooden country style coffee table with a varnished finish. Tom had pressed his name and the date into the side and in later years reinforcements were added to keep it all together. All these original features have been kept to tell the story of its life but to bring Tom’s table into the present I used grey furniture paint for the main body, and recolour black chalk paint for the feet and top. The top of a coffee table is a blank canvas to me and I think it’s good practice to treat them like a painting so out came the vintage stencil roller and I made a busy fifties style retro pattern using recolour buttered bread and lots of green and silver wax before finally sealing it with Annie sloan clear wax.

"I was looking for a piece to stand next to a small ornate fireplace in our 1920’s build home and kept coming back to this lovely makeover, named ‘Grace’. I’m so delighted to have bought it. Mandy took time and care in delivering it and although she emphasised the fact it was an old piece I can only re-emphasise that that is exactly what I was looking for. It is testament to her skills that she has given ‘Grace’ a wonderful new lease of life. The stencilling on the drawers is top notch; the piece is painted beautifully - including the bits you wouldn’t normally see, which I prefer. The beautifully highlighted claw feet on the bottom of the piece are a real treat to look at, and my beady-eyed art tutor/’general expert on painted stuff’ agreed Mandys’ work is superb – sympathetic to the piece and to a high standard. I know I shall enjoy having Grace grace our home for many years".

"I don’t like to match furniture and love mish mash, quirky and odd looking things lol. I absolutely love them. My house is 203 years old and is grade II listed. I think it makes an old cottage come alive and puts a modern twist on it. I love furniture that tells a story or gets people talking at a house party".
