Hand Carved Grey Queen Throne Chair Seat

When I saw this chair I knew it had potential. It came wearing gold paint and a bright hurt your eyes pink and loose limbs.

It’s only when you start the cleaning process you see the bones of a piece, it’s history and this piece has plenty of history.

I removed two layers of material one velour and one like the old carpet bag material.

The seat was packed with old long reed or grass like material and 3 rusty springs. The back material was stitched to a piece of cardboard box with Arabic writing on which was more in keeping with the velour timescale. But what intrigued me more was the wood it was hand carved with hand tools only and evident in the tool marks, finish and texture and symmetry. It was then covered with a white plaster like substance to curve out the joints and even the look no sanding down here or machinery to help the process, now I know I have a one off piece and a very heavy piece at that.

After a good sand and clean and necessary strengthening of arms put a new wood baseboard and a board for foam to sit on I could start the transformation.

Painted it in Fusion Little Lamb a beautiful soft grey added a defining wax to slightly age it and black wax to define the detailing.

For the material I chose Emma J Shipley’s Audubon cotton satin fabric, which is part of her magical animalia collaboration with interior experts Clarke and Clarke and is inspired by botanical Illustrator John Jame Audubon, whom is known for his paintings depicting magical creatures of the sky.

I just loved that pop of yellow against the white and black.

To finish I added black gimp to really make it pop. Now doesn’t she look just look exquisite.

Please note the seating conforms with all upholstery fire regulations and as with all hand painted or preloved furniture there may be some small imperfections or evidence of a past life, with this piece I wanted to conserve as much of it’s past as possible so there are signs of where the odd tack or pin has been but nothing to take away from its beauty.

There is nothing understated about this stunningly reimagined, low set, Queen Anne Throne Chair.

It is delightfully showy, and the fabulous choice of fabric, (inspired by the work of John James Audubon’s Birds of America), complements the impressive hand carving, and bang on trend colour palette of the frame superbly.

This piece has had an interesting history. Before its stylish make over, the seat and back were stuffed with an assortment of reeds and grasses, (now happily replaced with a new baseboard and delightfully squishy foam), and the back was stitched to card with Arabic writing on it.

Most intriguing of all, are the gentle tool marks left by the original craftsman. They give the chair a sense of history, and a unique finish and texture that you just cannot find in more modern or reproduction furniture.

This elegant chair will look amazing in a lovely French, or Botanical themed bedroom, or bathroom. It would sit beautifully as an occasional chair in a lounge, large entrance hall, or in a conservatory or garden room.

It’s perfectly imperfect, and gorgeously glamorous, and going to give someone so much pleasure over the coming years as they add to its history.

We found this really good website called Upcite where we saw lots of different and unusual furniture. We were after something oldie looking to go under the eaves in our little snug room that has oak beams. This needed to be a specific size and look. Soo pleased when we found the Upcite website with a range of possibilities. We ordered a sideboard and it arrived within a few days and fits perfectly. It now looks lovely with it’s Christmas Garland on! From our experience we would recommend Upcite to others.

Item is nice but experience wasn't great

I did eventually receive the sideboard after a lot of back and forth, and the seller reached out to me. It arrived with a few scratches but that’s not the sellers fault and can be touched up. The experience however was rather stressful. I wish the seller had been as proactive from the start and not only after I complained, as it is simply nerve wrecking to spend close to £1000 and then never really hear from them and having to chase them repeatedly and the item not being delivered when it was agreed. Overall I am happy with the sideboard, but my experience wasn’t great and that’s how I genuinely feel.
