This pretty little mirror was a bit worse for wear when we got her, and, with her old fashioned brown varnish she wasnโt showing herself in her best light.ย
๐ To glam her up I wanted a makeover befitting her age and style so after cleaning & sanding I started with an elderberry base coat. Once dried I used some wax in strategic places so I could distress back to the base colour, then layered up with pine blue and finally rose water, waxing and wet sanding to distress at each stage. ๐จย
Finally I applied a white wax to the whole piece and gold gilding wax to accentuate the details - et voila, a pretty distressed pink mirror shelf with hanging rail!ย
How gorgeous would this vintage mirror shelf look in a shabby chic or boho styled bedroom or bathroom?! ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐ย
During the upcycling process I have taken care to ensure the finish is to a high quality. The paints I use are professional grade specifically for furniture upcycling. I prefer the mineral silk paints rather than chalk paint - this makes my products durable and gives a good quality finish. I use top coats such as Polyvine decorators varnish for added protection.
* This unit has both age and history and has been previously loved, there may therefore be signs of a life well lived. I have however taken care to lovingly restore it (as with all my work) to a beautiful re-loved statement piece that would sit proudly in any home
If it's a perfect factory finish you're after then upcycled may not be the best choice for you. All my pieces are chosen for their character and (like all of us) may have small flaws that add to this.ย

I think it makes an old cottage come alive and puts a modern twist on it. I love furniture that tells a story or gets people talking at a house party".

"I was looking for a piece to stand next to a small ornate fireplace in our 1920โs build home and kept coming back to this lovely makeover, named โGraceโ. Iโm so delighted to have bought it. Mandy took time and care in delivering it and although she emphasised the fact it was an old piece I can only re-emphasise that that is exactly what I was looking for. It is testament to her skills that she has given โGraceโ a wonderful new lease of life. The stencilling on the drawers is top notch; the piece is painted beautifully - including the bits you wouldnโt normally see, which I prefer. The beautifully highlighted claw feet on the bottom of the piece are a real treat to look at, and my beady-eyed art tutor/โgeneral expert on painted stuffโ agreed Mandysโ work is superb โ sympathetic to the piece and to a high standard. I know I shall enjoy having Grace grace our home for many years".
